I love the idea of all natural homemade concoctions for various maladies: hot tea with lemon or honey for a sore throat, the "B.R.A.T." diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) for any gastro-intestinal upsets, aloe for burns, piquant spices or eucalyptus for congestion, chicken soup for anything and everything.... Just lately, I read about a honey, water and apple cider vinegar combination that is apparently nothing short of miraculous for sinus pressure and pain.
But when you have the plague, sometimes you just crave some good ol' fashioned narcotics.
Today I called in sick. (It was legitimate this time, not just because I wanted to hang out with Betty...although I must admit that was a perk!) The other day I came down with the beginnings of a sinus cold and today it is full-blown. (Get it? Do you see what I did there? Full-blown? You blow your nose when you are congested?HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, the cleverness of me.) Anyway, it was still a productive day around the house. I even finished all the grocery shopping before the big February storm that is due later tonight! Hooray! Now, if only I could enjoy a snow day tomorrow from within a fort in my living room. But I can't. Because I'm sick. And tomorrow is Saturday anyway. What a waste of a perfectly good storm.
In any case, by the time I got home from the store, I felt rotten. Revived only by food (duh) and a steamy shower with peppermint soap, I began to medicate. Post pseudoephedrine (God bless modern medicine!), I am currently mouth-breathing on my couch, nose saturated in petroleum jelly (only on the outside though, so as not to damage my nasal lining) surrounded by various beverages (hot and cold), saline nasal spray, pillows, blankets, remote controls, Luden's cherry cough drops (yummy!), anti bacterial gel, tissues and chapstick. Now, for entertainment...
Habibi and I haven't had live television for nearly three years. Netflix has yet to send our next disc. I spent much of the wee hours of the morning (when I awoke with a dry, sore throat) reading so I'm not particularly in the mood for that. This is the worst part about being sick.
But hark! What's this I recall? Why, it's the best news of the week!!! Last night, Habibi ordered an app on our iPad for Betty. I kid you not, there are apps for cats! I love it more than words. Despite her affinity for the game, however, Betty is not very good at it. The object is to paw at a digital mouse (making it squeak!) that scurries hither and thither all over the screen. The "player" then earns 100 points for each swipe. But just like her adoptive mother (me), Betty is not much of a gamer. So there she sits, mesmerized by the animated mouse. Occasionally, she reaches out to bat at the screen (it is absolutely darling), but she tends to try and find the mouse under the iPad when it runs off screen. Once she discovers that this is to no avail, she does her best kitty flirting with the machine and rolls on her back, bats her eyes and spreads her legs. (Atta girl!) Again, much like her mama, she is not technologically savvy, leaving her with nothing but her girlish devices to get what she wants.
All in all, I'm glad today was a sick day. Either this is waaaay better than TV, or the drugs are working overtime.
