New

I have been a neglectful blogger this past month.  Despite the infinite list of excuses I could list, there is but one reason I have left Anouchka Talks by the wayside:  I've been too damn busy!

On top of the hustle and bustle that comes with the Christmas season (love it!), Habibi and I were being swallowed by another time-sucker.  Just after the New Year's weekend, we moved.  Again.  In our 2+ years of marriage, we have lived in three apartments.  I know, it is not at all uncommon for most young, married couples to start their lives together in an apartment (or even two).  However, most of the time, they upgrade to a larger living space (typically a house).  While this seems to be the natural progression, Habibi and I are perhaps in a state of arrested development (which also happens to be the best TV show in the history of ever).

Instead of "upgrading" to a house or even a to bigger apartment, we decided to downsize.  Little by little, we have been shaving off rooms in our home.  Our first apartment was a two bedroom, one and a half bathroom shithole.  Apartment number two was a two bedroom, one bathroom unit that had a killer pantry.  Our current home is a one bedroom, one bathroom tree house and we love it (so far).

But the new year and our new home aren't the only new things in our lives.  Oh heavens no!  In addition to these, Habibi has a new job which brings an entirely new perspective and a new set of people in our lives.  On a more superficial note, we are in a new (to us) part of town, going to a new gym location (same chain as before), we have a new computer, a new TV, a new bedspread, a new shower curtain.  Shoot!  I even tried a new kind of yogurt!  I know, I know, none of these latter things are particularly life-altering.  On the other hand, they still lend a sense of "newness" to our little world, offering new vantage points, new sensations, new smells, new combinations of color, new tastes....

I have been ready for a change of scenery for quite some time now, and although the novelty of all these things will wear off shortly, I'm grateful for their comforting presence for the time being.  So, in reflection of all things new, let's experiment with a new look for Anouchka Talks.

Happy New Year!

  1. Although all the "new-ness" may seem mundane to some, I think even those new little things are so fun! CONGRATS!

Navigating Summer, School, and COVID-19

Guys, it has been awhile.  What can I say?  I just haven't been feeling inspired.  I know, I know...  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to discover that I am almost never  inspired; you can find evidence of this conclusion by reading any one of my past posts.  Seriously, just pick one.  But really, it has been busy around here.  Since March, we have been homeschooling both kids.  Part of this was mandated, of course, when everything shut down earlier this year.  However, since we were having growing success with taking charge of our kids' education this spring, we decided to run with it and continued with certain elements of school through the summer.  We will be full on homeschooling for the coming year because our public education system has turned into an absolute cluster.  This is going to be such a throwaway year anyway, so yeah.  We're "those people" now.   Who knows?  Maybe this year, my daughter has...

Brain Barf #4: Senior Citizens, Italian-Americans, Dreamboats, and Tap Shoes

My neighbor sent me this last night: In five years, J.Lo will be getting discounts at restaurants and movie theaters because she will be considered a senior citizen.  And she will still look like that.   YOU GUYS I SAID J.LO IS ALMOST A SENIOR CITIZEN.  SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE YOU'RE NOT EVEN LISTENING. Meanwhile, I look more and more like this every day: My friend MoMo was invited to play pool with a friend of hers today.  She told me about it, which is free license for me to post it here. MoMo (and her friend): Anouchka: In her friend's defense, he has only been in the U.S. for about 18 months and apparently thought that an "Italian-American" would be a rare and exotic treat. I'm been pestering Habibi lately to spoil me and praise me and tell me I'm a rare and divine treasure more often, but it hasn't been working.  I'll send him text messages periodically, featuring my face,  looking putrid fr...
